A Little Girl’s Question

I forgot to tell this story which happened at Z’s school one morning.  I accompanied Z to his classroom and helped him get settled in his chair. He sat besides a little girl who was looking at me curiously. Little did I know that there was something she was meaning to ask that was obviously puzzling her. So I was taken a back when she blurted out, “What are you doing here? Mommies are supposed to be at the office by now earning money so we can buy lots and lots of things.” I couldn’t answer her right away. I was really surprised that  it took me a few seconds before I found my voice. Finally I was able to answer that not all moms go to the office to work. I relayed to S what transpired that day. He said you should’ve told her instead that mommies should be at home taking care of their children. I laughed it off and told him of course I can’t tell her that. I completely understand why other moms choose to work rather than just staying at home but that thing is really not for me because I grew up without my mom and dad around. Had the situation been different maybe I wouldn’t be too adamant in insisting to stay at home and personally raising my kid and not entrusting him to a yaya. But unfortunately, it’s that way so I choose this path even if it means we couldn’t afford to buy one of those beautiful Entertainment Centers.
