When we bought Chewee on impulse for Z’s fourth birthday, a voice at the back of my head was telling me, “You’re nuts of even thinking of buying a dog. It’s an added responsibility not to mention the fact that it will add to your family’s expenses too!” I was not really sure how a dog will fit in our family. My biggest concern was what if it will be a burden to us in the long run. Despite this I chose to ignore the what if’s that were swimming inside my head and so Chewee was welcomed in our family. To say that we don’t regret having him is an understatement because we all love him! I know every dog owner is saying this but I swear he’s the sweetest dog ever! He comes to us with eagerness when he’s called, licks us all over, and proceeds to lie down and show his belly. This is then our cue to tickle him and we know he’s tickled because his feet would suddenly jerk up and down. He’s so mild tempered. He’s generally happy by himself, doesn’t bark at all except when he’s about to poop or pee or thirsty. He doesn’t bark even to ask for food. He likes our cat, Muning, because when he sees her he starts to wag his tail excitedly. Muning was a snob at first but I think in the end she couldn’t resist his charms because she started hanging out with Chewee in the terrace. At times, I would still see Muning scratch Chewee, especially when Chewee gets fascinated with Muning’s tail and bites it, but Chewee doesn’t seem to mind and has learned to scratch like a cat in his defense. Most of the time though they just seem to enjoy each other’s company.
Aside of being a source of laughter, Chewee also caused quite a stir with our neighbors. He managed to squeeze his way through our makeshift fence and decided he likes it better at our neighbor’s terrace. I can only imagine our neighbor’s horror of going out and finding herself being ambushed with licks on the feet. She was so surprised she had to step on top of a chair until we came and rescued her from Chewee. The most embarrasing part is this didn’t happen once but twice!
Z loves Chewee too! I’m just so glad we saw Chewee first before that car that Z wanted so much. Hearing him squeal with delight when he’s playing with Chewee is priceless. Z learning to be responsible by feeding his pet is a plus. Of course there were incidents like when Chewee did justice to his name and chewed off Z’s Underdog toy from Wendy’s. It was the first time Z experienced losing a toy that was somebody else’s fault so he was really upset and cried a bowl of tears but that will teach him to take care of his toys and not leave it within Chewee’s reach. We might have bought Z a lot of gifts before but I think giving him a dog was the best thing we did.
To end this post I’ll share his latest trick.
